First Day

It was incredible. One thing I've noticed about most salespeople is that they are funny, enthusiastic, outgoing, and positive. I had a terrific first day, was outfitted with my very own ibook, and took the "grand tour" of the company. The warehouse and press room are astoundingly huge and when I walked through them I felt as though I were in a nuclear submarine--metal everywhere and big, red, blinking buttons and lights on the walls.

The second day I went out on some sales calls with Kathy. We discovered that we have a great deal in common, and we talked about NYC (I've never been there but vow to live there one day. She lived there for 10 years). Later, she, Kristina, and I were reflecting about the merits of our jobs in advertising:

Kathy: There's a new medical building going up there (in her territory). I'm all like, Yeah!

Me: Wow. I can't believe how much development is happening around here. It's awesome for business, but at the same time, I'm like YUCK! STOP! KEEP MY TREES!

Kathy: I know! I KNOW! I feel the SAME way. Our jobs are only promoting developers.

Kristina: Yeah, and don't forget about how we are the driving force behind consumerism and the fuel that thrives off of making people go into debt thinking that they need more stuff. We fuel the consumption based society.

We all sadly shook our heads together. Then we laughed maniacally as we considered the piles of money we will make. Or maybe we were laughing at the irony of the world.

But let's consider this: I looked for jobs on idealist.org. They wanted someone with more marketing or sales experience. So I figure I have to sell out before the idealists will take me seriously. The logic is somewhat skewed, but I'll make it there in the end. And maybe, if they're lucky, so will Kathy and Kristina.

I live in NYC. Sometimes it's fabulous, and sometimes it's not all it's cracked up to be. (See my blog entry "Something's fishy.")

I moved here from NJ about 2 years ago and have to make a point of going out and doing as much as possible to justify my rent. Of course, there's so much to do and see--even for free--that I encourage you to at least come visit before moving here!
